Smash Records (Washington DC)

With only three ‘states’ (DC isn’t a state, technically) left, I was excited to knock this one out, especially after a long lull since my last new one. I was staying about 2 miles from here, and I was lucky to find a record store and vegetarian Indian food so close (and close to each other).

I got there at the time Google Maps (and their front door) said they opened but nobody was home. No problem – I was pretty hungry. So I walked down the street to Vegz and got a chickpea curry with rice AND naan (that’s insane, Jeremy).

After lunch I wandered back and the place was open. There was only one other person inside and the guy behind the counter barely looked up when I entered. I went to the ‘new arrivals’ section at the back of the store and had a look.

I guess I am perhaps a bit out of touch with general record store pricing of late. And I have no doubt the expenses to keep this place running in this neighborhood are high. But holy crap! The prices were over the top.

I am as much of a fan of Good Times as anyone, I have probably seen the vast majority of the episodes. And I am sure Florida (excuse me, Esther) has an amazing voice. But this will unfortunately never be more than a novelty record. Nearly $50??

It could be argued that Michael Nesmith solo records are just as much of a novelty. (As both a Monkees fan AND a Wool Hat fan, I disagree). But I think these are VERY reasonably priced, you don’t see these often and they appear to be in great shape.

I picked around for a while – they had a small area with some cool vintage clothing as well as posters which was interesting. Smash Records is worth a stop if you are in DC!
